SACRAMENTO, California — Proposition X would have authorized the state to secede from the union if Republicans had won a third presidential term in a row — the previous two being closely contested.
"I wasn't sure what I was capable of doing if McCain had won," said staunch Marin County liberal Conifer Smiley. "We all just felt at the end of our political ropes. There would've been rioting. It would've been nasty. I like the country as a whole — I'm glad it didn't come to that."
